Hello and welcome to another BTS post!!!!
At this point, I do not think I need to keep stating what a year 2020 has been. We all can agree that 2020 has not gone as planned for a lot of people. We have all lost something or someone. Most importantly we have all lost time which we can never get back. Looking back on the year, I do realize that I have learned a lot about myself. I cannot really say that I have improved on myself as a lot of people seemed to have. But I am sure that the self-reflection I had would someday spur me into action. Cheering me and a lot of fans around the world has been BTS. I have listened to their songs and found courage and strength to keep going even when I was in the most depressed state during the lockdown.
To list just 5 songs out of their discography is hard but I have tried to make a shortlist. Whilst Dynamite cheered me up and won so many awards, it did not make it to the top 5 of my favorite BTS songs of 2020. Please have in mind that all the songs on this list are songs that were released in 2020.
Let’s get to it.
5. Still With You by Jungkook (BTS)
I got hooked right from the first line.
“A pitch dark room
I shouldn’t get used to it
But I’m used to it again’
…
If don’t have this, I might just fall apart”
It’s a song that acknowledges the simple things that hold the most importance. Exposing earnest desperation and wishes to have back certain simple things. This song might seem like a longing for a long-gone or lost lover. Personally, I hear it as a longing for the simple things that make life bearable and worth living. I really loved this song and the jazzy ballad vibe just makes it perfect
4. Your Eyes Tell (Japanese Album)
Honestly, the vibe that I get from their Japanese songs is just always so different and special. There is a specific line in this song that just makes it one of their best songs of the year for me
“Even the darkness we see is so beautiful”
This reminds me of something Namjoon said at one of their concerts about the Most Beautiful Moment in Life. He said something along the lines of, the most beautiful moments in a person’s life might and most possibly encompass sadness, grief, and strive and that these tribulations (looking back) make us realize that, that moment was a beautiful moment. This song holds a special place in my heart, not to mention the vocals that Jimin, JK, Jin, and V delivered in the song.
3. Blue & Grey
This song is a guitar ballad that tells the story of an artist’s burn-out. According to Songwriter V, it is a song that doesn’t try to comfort you by saying, it will get better or you will get over it. But it conveys the pain and the shared heartbeat of the artist and the listener. It is definitely one of my favorite songs on this list. I personally described this song as one feeling ‘helpless greed for happiness’. One line in this song encapsulates the entire song
“I just wanna be happier
Am I being too greedy”
This song is so simple and painful, Not only do you hear concealed and revealed pain in the member’s voice as they sing. The lyrics serve up a plate of longed shied away because of fear of greed. Is wanting to be happier a great greed? Using BTS as a case study, You would expect them to be content and happy. They wishing to be happier might appear to be greed. I fear that wanting to be happier even when I am so privilege might not be understood by others.
2. Dis-ease
While most songs on this list hit you in the face with sad vocals, this song sounds cheery but it highlights mental illness. To best explain how I feel about this song, HERE is a link to a DKDKTV explain video of this song. How this song discusses mental health and wellness.
1. Black Swan
Losing passion or the inability to do what you love is like death. This song is that of self-reflection and gripping fear
“An ocean where daylight never touch”
Potential never seen or used or produced for the consumption and benefit of others or yourself
