2 TYPES OF BIG BOOKS

Hello and welcome!!!

After all these times, I am still unable to start a post normally. Anyway today I will be telling you about two types of big books and I mean books that are over 450 pages, this might not seem big to a lot of readers but to me, I classify them as big books.

BIG BOOK TYPE 1

These are books that are very long, almost too long but yet you wish it was longer, either because the story was too good or it just didn’t end the way you wanted (which is not necessarily a bad thing). These are books that sort of fly by and you almost feel like you haven’t read a lot because of how much you are enjoying the book.

You fall in love with a few characters, made enemies, cried and got angry and start to wish that the next book in the series is released immediately or that the book wasn’t a standalone.

So with that said, I will list a few big books that I have read that I really loved that fell in this category. There are a lot of books that I won’t add to this list but I sure have a lot on my mind.

1. The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon (848 pages): This book was a beast but I flew through it so quickly that i even surprised myself. The world building was epic, the characters almost flawless, the story progression (although the end was a little let down but that was just me) everything was just perfect. Even with how long this book was I still felt like the story could have used a little more pages
2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (601 pages): I read the anniversary edition which is why there are more pages. This is actually one of those books that I would say had the perfect length, both for the story and the book. I read this book recently and I think of it as an imperfect perfection. I mean, its not the best book in the world but it just strikes a cord in me and I think about it often.
3. The Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos (468 pages): This is a book that I haven’t really heard about in the bookish community and that is very odd as I really enjoyed this book. One word I can use to describe this book is ‘different’. It is very different from other fantasy books I have read, the world is spectacular, the characters are interesting, the magic systems are intriguing and I absolutely enjoyed it. I read the whole book in a day and I couldn’t believe it.

BIG BOOK TYPE 2

These are books that go on and on without actually doing anything. I mean books that I feel could have been wrapped up in 200 pages or less, sometimes I don’t even hate the books it just usually feel like reading over 400 pages was a waste of time. There was no progressive plot, no interesting characters, just bland story telling and annoying AF (although with books like this you can usually tell when you are about 30 to 40 pages in).

Sometimes and I mean very rarely, I do actually enjoy the books but I can’t help but think that I wasted my time reading the whole book.

1. Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor (536 pages): After trying to read this book 3 times normally without getting through it I gave up on it for a year. Honestly I can understand why some people loved this book but it just isn’t for me. The 4th time I read it, I realized that it was the writing style I didn’t like, everything was over-explained, prolonged, stretched and exaggerated. I have to agree that the world building was great and the ending was kind of okay, but I felt the whole thing could have been wrapped up nicely in about 300 pages.
2. Opposition (Lux #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout (533 pages): Hhm, I don’t even know what to say about this book, than plain boring (and this is even based on the fact that I read the first 4 books and thought they were high school stage cheesy but still enjoyed). This is a prime example of a book that just goes on and on and on and on (I can’t say it enough) honestly, this could have been wrapped up in 200 pages or even less.
3. Save the Date by Morgan Matson (417 pages): You might ask why this book is on this list when its less that 450 pages. Well, this book felt longer that 417 pages, it felt like a thousand pages, it’s like watching a particularly 5 minute clip for 100 hours straight. A lot was happening but at the same time, nothing was happening, I can’t even believe I finished this book back in 2018. I would have thrown it in my Never Gonna Finish pile if I read it this year.

That’s it for my two types of big books, I tried to condense the ideas I had about big books into this post. I am sure you have big books that you can chuck into one of the two categories. I would like to see the books you would add and the ones you would remove.
